Soutpansberg, Limpopo
The Soutpansberg (Salt Pan mountains) in the Limpopo is the northernmost region in South Africa. The Soutpansberg is named after the salt pans that are found there, but this area is also called the Land of Legends due to the number of sites that are sacred to the Venda people, and thanks to the discovery of the Lost City at Mapangubwe – an area that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the archeological discoveries made there.
The Soutpansberg is a delightful mix of rural landscapes, tropical fruit plantations, sub-tropical rainforest, mountains and grassland, beautiful and dotted with the huge Baobab trees that are an iconic symbol of the Limpopo Province. The Soutpansburg is also known for the larger than normal variety of indigenous trees that make up its rainforests and make them distinct from more southern afro-montane belts in South Africa.
There are many natural attractions in the Soutpansberg such as Thathe Vondo, and the route north for Louis Trichardt will take you to the Pafuri Gate of the Kruger National Park – at the very northern tip of the Kruger Park – arguably the loveliest part of the Kruger National Park and the least developed. The route north-west will take you to Mapungubwe National Park.
Other attractions in the Soutpansberg include two great hiking trails through forest – the Hanglip Hiking Trail outside Louis Trichardt and the Entabeni Hiking Trail. The Blouberg Nature Reserve offers affordable safari experiences in beautiful scenery, and the Medike Mountain Reserve offers various activities in a proclaimed Heritage area.
