Waking up early enough to catch the meerkat before they run off for a day of foraging is not the easiest thing, but the scenery at sunrise on a local farm make it all worthwhile. On arrival at a designated meeting spot and time, the tour leader, Devey, takes us to the farm and after a cup of hot coffee and rusks, we make our way to the burrows where the meerkat spent the previous evening.
While waiting for them to emerge, Devey tells us about their family structure, and how they have a built in solar panel that they face towards the sun to warm up. As the meerkat do not all get up at the same time, we watch the antics of each individual as it appears, with further enlightenment from Devey.
When the whole family is up, a sudden exodus happens and the foraging for the day begins. We follow for some distance, watching all the antics.
As the meerkat do not have any fixed pattern on waking up and moving off, each tour lasts for 2-3 hours, depending on the meerkat activity.
