Louis Trichardt

The gateway to the Soutpansberg, the small, pretty town of Louis Trichardt lies in a tropical fruit growing area in the Limpopo lowveld, at the foot of the Soutpansberg mountains. It is considered the gateway to the Soutpansberg due to its location, airport and its position on the N1, and is en-route to the Pafuri Gate of the Kruger National Park.

The Soutpansberg Region is known for it rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty, and many Soutpansberg attractions are within easy reach from Louis Trichardt. Attractions include Thathe Vondo (inclusive of the Sacred Forest and Lake Fundudzi), the Medike Mountain Reserve, the Blouberg Nature Reserve, the Hangklip Forest Reserve and well-known and beautiful Hanglip Hiking Trail.

Note: Louis Trichardt was renamed Makhado for a while, but has been renamed Louis Trichardt. It is still the centre of the Makhado municipal district however.

Getting there: Take the N1 north from Johannesburg and stay on the N1. Total travelling distance is 426km.
