Shakas Rock

Shaka’s Rock is a few kilometers south of Salt Rock on the Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. It is mainly a residential area rather than a village but it is a very popular holiday spot nonetheless. As the name suggests, the huge rock here was used by Shaka, the Zulu king, as a lookout point.

The beach is particularly beautiful with the golden sands flanked by picturesque cliffs and craggy rocks in which a tidal pool has been built. From Willard Beach at Ballito it is possible to walk to Shaka’s Rock through a hole in the cliff but make sure that you check the tides. The main beach is called Catfish Beach and it is used as a launching site for ski-boats as well as being an excellent protected bathing beach with lifeguards on duty every day.

The beauty of Shaka’s Rock is that it has retained its tranquility and small hamlet feel but it is within easy driving distance of any activity one could wish for. It is only about 40km from Durban and mere minutes away from Ballito and Umhlanga. Some of the best golf courses in the country can be found at Umhlali, Princes Grant and Mount Edgecombe all of which are ranked in the top hundred courses in South Africa.
