Kakamas, Green Kalahari, Northern Cape

The Kakamas District of the Green Kalahari includes the small town of Kakamas as well as a large farming area of vineyards, lucerne and cotton fields around the Orange River, west of Upington. The Orange River has provided irrigation via canals built in the 19th century – and still featuring the waterwheels of that period.

Kakamas attractions include adventure activities in the nearby Orange River, such as those offered by Liquid360 and the very popular Khamkirri Nature Reserve, the Riemvasmaak Community Conservancy with its hot springs and well known 4×4 trails, vineyards and local farms, farm produce and wines, fly-fishing on the Orange River, and the nearby Augrabies National Park, incorporating the Augrabies Falls and hiking.

The natural landscape in this area is also famous for the distinct and rather bizarre looking ‘kokerboom’ or quiver tree. The town of Kakamas itself is very small, with only 8000 residents.

Getting there: Take the N14 west from Upington.
