Koffiefontein, Xhariep Region, Free State Many South African Towns are named something ‘fountain’ or ‘fontein’. So it is that a 19th century coffee stop for transport riders from Kimberley to the Free State became Koffiefontein. Around 1880 one of these riders found a diamond, and Koffiefontein quickly turned from a rest stop into a town. Though its heyday is long over, Koffiefontein still has an active diamond mine.
