Fauresmith

Fauresmith is a very old small town in the Trans-Gariep, or Xhariep Region of the Free State, probably best known these days for its equestrian events. The annual midwinter three day 205km International Equestrian Endurance Race is considered to be the most gruelling race in South Africa, and one of the most gruelling in the world, but a closer look past the hooves and beautiful Arab horses that kick up the Xhariep dust will reveal Fauresmith’s history as the second oldest town in the Free State.

Fauresmith is the only town in South Africa with a railway line running down the centre of the main road, and to this day the beautiful train that travels that line is a classic steam locomotive. Between the ‘chjoe chjoe train’ and the lovely old buildings, you will feel transported back in time.

Temperatures in Fauresmith can drop well below zero in midwinter, but it’s well worth a visit to watch the the Endurance Race. Individual competitors and Equestrian Clubs from around South Africa and the world gather with some of the most beautiful Arabian and Anglo-Arab endurance horses ever bred. It’s a big event, with over 300 competitors, and even non horse-lovers will get carried away with the competitive atmosphere, the spirited horses, the riders and their support teams.

Fauresmith is truly special and a trip through the Free State wouldn’t be complete without a stop here.
