Petrus Steyn

Petrus Steyn is about as small and as quaint as a Free State ‘dorpie’ can get, and that is very small and very quaint. However, what distinguishes Petrus Steyn from other similar dorpies is the massive bank of grain silos just outside the town. The corner shop, wide main street, Victorian buildings and the slightly dusty air may be typical Free State hinterland, but the modern silos denote Petrus Steyn’s critical position in the agricultural industry of the north eastern Free State.

The farmlands surrounding Petrus Steyn offer hospitality and activities such as 4×4, mtb, hikes and walks and horse-riding, though these are more simply farm activities than commercially marketed attractions. The farms here are more crop oriented than ranch.

Petrus Steyn is on the Riemland Route, and it is worth a stop for arts and crafts shops and curios in the town, home-baked goodies and just an appreciation of the old buildings and Boer history on display with small monuments such as the Ox Wagon Wheel Monument and the Afrikaans Language Monument.

Getting there: Take the R57 from Sasolburg, or the R707 from Rosendal.
