Baviaanskloof

The Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve in the Eastern Cape is about 120km from Port Elizabeth and is one of the largest wilderness conservation areas in the country. It’s extent of 500,000ha of land is collaboratively managed by Eastern Cape Parks.

A wonderful scenic route to the start of the Baviaanskloof is to take the R331 from Port Elizabeth or the R330 from Humansdorp via Hankey and Patensie, and on to Komdomo campsite, the entrance to the kloof. Allow at least two days to drive from your starting point through the kloof (6-8 hours driving time in the kloof alone) and extra time to stay in this peaceful, unspoiled natural environment.

The road through the Baviaanskloof is quite an adventure in itself. Narrow, steep, winding and gravel surfaced, with several river crossings – you will need a 4×4 or high clearance vehicle for the stretch between Cambria and Geelhoutbos – if you want to traverse the kloof. Activities include rock and mountain climbing, camping, bird watching, a 4×4 trail and scenic drives through stunningly beautiful landscapes of a type to be found only in the Eastern Cape.

As part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and due to the area’s diverse habitat, the spectacular landscapes are home to more than a 1,000 different plant species. The flora of the area encompasses a wide range of genetic diversity, which includes the genetically distinct, ancient cycads. Two surviving species of these ancient plants are found in the Baviaanskloof area.

The reserve provides a habitat for more than 50 mammal species and over 300 bird species. Some of the larger mammal species found in the reserve are the Cape Leopard, Cape Buffalo, Kudu, Cape Mountain Zebra, Red Hartebeest, Bushbuck, Mountain Rhebuck, Eland and Baboon.

If you enjoy 4×4 trails, then the 34km trail to Osseberg is a must. It takes 3-4 hours and is packed with incredible views and spectacular fauna and flora. All day visitors to the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve need to purchase a Day Visitors Permit.  Permits are available at the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve Gates at the western and eastern entrances.  Smitskraal has been upgraded and is the official day visitors area for visitors wishing to stop in the Nature Reserve.

There are no shopping facilities or refuelling points in the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area.
