The Capricorn Region of the Limpopo stretches from the eastern-most point of the Drakensberg Mountains and the Wolkberg Mountains north to the Tropic of Capricorn.
The terrain of the Capricorn region is diverse – from misty forested mountains, valleys and passes the region drops down to lowveld bushland. The cultures, attractions and activities on offer are as diverse as the landscape – from the ‘English’ Capital of the Land of the Silver Mist to the ‘African’ Capital City of the Limpopo Province, the present day cultural diversity of the Capricorn is as rich as its heritage and history.
Particularly appealing to birders, hikers, fly-fishermen and anyone who loves forests, trees and waterfalls (is there anyone who doesn’t?) are the wooded, misty and beautiful attractions in the mountainous section of Capricorn, all accessible from the R71 to and from nearby Tzaneen in the neighbouring Valley of the Olifants. These include the hamlets of Haenerstburg and Houtbosdorp, the Wolkberg Wilderness Area, the Magoebaskloof, the Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail and Debegeni Falls in Woodbush Forest Reserve, Makapans Valley and the Lekgalemeetse Nature Reserve. The area is known for its endemic birdlife and excellent trout fishing, hiking trails and adventure activities such as forest capony slides.
In the lowveld area game farms and reserves such as the Polokwane Game Reserve offer big game viewing, and the well-ordered city of Polokwane offers a modern-day immersion into South African sports and culture.
