Gumbo, Broodryk victors at PUMA Trail Run Buffelspoort
Just over 600 trail running enthusiasts gathered at the Buffelspoort Dam in the North West Province on Sunday, 24 January 2016 to participate in the first PUMA Trail Run of the season.
Making his PUMA Trail Run debut, Tranquil Gumbo set the course on fire in the men’s 12km PUMA Trail Run claiming victory in a lightning fast time of 47 minutes 03 seconds. “I saw the event on television and just had to enter,” said Gumbo. “I really wanted to win, but would also have been happy with a podium finish. I like trail running because it’s tough, but enjoyable. Today’s route was perfect, exactly 12km. The competition was great, the route was technical but runnable and the support was amazing. Crossing the finish line first was a fantastic experience. I’ll definitely be back next year.” Altus Badenhorst came in second, while Itumeleng Khumalo finished third.
Adele Broodryk also made her PUMA Trail Run debut on the day. “My husband is taking part in his first triathlon today, the Fedhealth XTERRA Lite, so I decided to enter the trail run. I’m new to trail running and really enjoyed the route with its hills, rocks and scenery. I’d recommend this event to other runners because of the amazing atmosphere, beautiful scenery and good organisation. It’s something else,” said Broodryk who completed the 12km route in an impressive time of 56 minutes 59 seconds. Leilani Scheffer came in second, while Nicky Booyens finished third.
Kutliwano Taukobong was the first runner home in the men’s 6km PUMA Trail Run with a finishing time of 22 minutes 06 seconds. Franco came in second, while Daniel Ellis finished third.
Carla Prinsloo claimed gold in the women’s 6km PUMA Trail Run in a deserving time of 29 minutes 22 seconds. Petro van der Merwe came in second, while Caithlin Thompson finished third.
Forming part of the action of South Africa’s largest off road triathlon, the Fedhealth XTERRA, the PUMA Trail Run incorporates the XTERRA trail run routes. Entrants were treated to a perfect combination of technical, yet fun trails and magnificent scenery.
