Platinum Weekly awarded; supporting SAPS in fighting crime
“The most innovative newspaper on SAPS crime related news coverage”
Rustenburg – On Friday (18 Oct ‘13) officials from all the Communication Stations, Provincial Communication Offices and journalists from the printed media, radio- and television stations gathered at the Rustenburg Civic Centre for the SAPS North West Provincial Corporate Communicators Award ceremony, hosted by the Corporate Communications Department of the North West police.
The Platinum Weekly was awarded the title of 2012/2013 most innovative newspaper. The award was in recognition of the assistance given to the South African Police Services in its fight against crime. Making its mark through the printed- and electronic media for the last five years by publishing up-to-date, hard-core local news, but also adding a touch of general mining, economic and national news for the benefit of its readers, the Platinum Weekly last Friday received an award for, “dedication, selfless service and professionalism”.
In the opening to the event, provincial spokesperson, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane, said the Provincial Commissioner has seen fit to recognise the efforts of the media in supporting the SAPS, especially against the more vulnerable women and children.
“Without the support of key stakeholders, the police can never win this war.” They recognised the need to congratulate media companies, individual journalists and SAPS communication officials for their hard work and contributions in building the SAPS image and improving relations between all stakeholders.
The theme for the awards was very aptly named, “Working together in the fight against crime”.
Speaking at the ceremony Brigadier Thulani paid homage to the media for relentlessly publishing SAPS-related articles. Thulani said “Paying tribute to all the media houses, journalist and the SAPS communication officials; we all have one agenda, one mission and one public that we serve; and together we can do more to fight crime”.
The Platinum Weekly would like to offer our congratulations to all our colleagues in the media industry honoured with these prestigious awards, including all eight members of the Communications Department of Rustenburg SAPS Cluster – especially Captain Elsabé Augoustides and Constable Ofentse Mokgadi – who without a doubt make Rustenburg a better place.
From everyone here at the Platinum Weekly editorial team we’d like to say thank you to SAPS and the community for this humbling experience. We are constantly dealing with a flow of information to and from the community and even though it’s not always perfect, we’re constantly striving to improve to ensure that the truth surfaces. We know we’re not be the thickest newspaper, but through community involvement and the support of our readers, we are making a difference to the communities we serve. And most important, we do this only by the Grace of God.
