Duplicate ID’s
The Department of Home Affairs is calling on all people to verify whether their ID numbers are not duplicated.
What is a duplicate ID?
A Duplicate ID is when a person is having more than one ID numbers or is sharing an ID number with someone else.
What should one do in the case of having a duplicate ID?
Those who are affected should visit the nearest Home Affairs office with the following documents:
- Two recent ID photos
If Sharing an ID number with someone
- Proof of birth is required; Birth certificate with birth entry number, reference book or clinic card
- Certified copies of parent’s ID books and marriage certificate
If Married
- Submit a certified copy of marriage certificate, or a copy of divorce decree if divorced to ensure your status is correctly captured.
Female with Children
- Submit certified copies of birth certificates of all children and fill in children’s particulars on the DHA-24, DHA-288 forms at the office, to transfer children to the correct ID number.
Duplicate death cases
- Submit all ID books of the deceased person
- Valid contact details of the informant
- Informant’s Identity book and certified copy
- Affidavit stating the informant knew the deceased

Verify your Identity Number through the following means:
Send SMS to 32551 with your identity number or visit www.dha.gov.za and follow the link “Duplicate”
