The Shuntin Shed Restaurant, Bot River
When the Cape Town to Caledon railway line was constructed, towns like Somerset West, Grabouw, Calendon and Bot River opened up to trade with the mother city. The line, running through the Hottentots Mountains was an enormous engineering feat, and this line was an important economic infrastructure until the N2 national road was built just after the Second World War.
This led to the 1903 shunting shed to look for a new purpose which it found it in 2006 when it was beautifully restored as a restaurant and bar, with all the usual railway paraphernalia, even the original train seats, to accommodate a 100-seater restaurant. The green leather and bankers lamps remind one of an old fashioned poker or pool room; the atmosphere is relaxed, with 60’s music playing, just right to enjoy hearty pub grub washed down with a local wine.
Choose to sit outside with a view overlooking the Bot River Valley or inside the quirky bar area, and settle in. This restaurant is renowned for the range of freshly made pizzas, and for ribs and slow-cooked pork roast on a Sunday. Open for breakfasts on request, as the breakfast pizza is a special favorite with two fried eggs, bacon and mushrooms.
Every Thursday night is quiz night and this is a fun way to integrate with the locals.
Everyone is welcome, including children and pets. For kids there are delicious milkshakes – even bubblegum flavour!
