Smuts House Museum
Home of Jan Smuts 1870 – 1950
The museum plays an important part of the South African heritage. The museum was the original home of General Jan Christian Smuts, who was also known as Oubaas (‘old boss’ in Afrikaans). General Jan Smuts was a general (on the side of the Boers) in the Anglo-Boer War, a commander in World War One, and second-in-command to Winston Churchill in World War Two.
The fascinating memorabilia and photographs on display at the Smuts House Museum, tells an important tale of times past. There are also photographs and military memorabilia of all three wars with which Oubaas was involved.
The grass was originally planted by Smuts himself and are now used to host a number of event.
After the tour of the museum, make sure that you find time to appreciate the indigenous garden. A short walk takes you to Smuts Koppie, the rocky hill where the ashes of Smuts and his beloved wife, Isie, are scattered. A tea garden, set under tall trees.
