Must-see: The Pioneer Museum
The Pioneer Museum is an open air museum set in a restored 3 hectare Victorian settler farmstead in Silverton, Pretoria.
The historic farm house was initially the property of the Cape farmer David Botha, who later sold the farm to Hans Mundt, a German immigrant, in 1874. The house is surrounded by a traditional ‘Bakoond’ (baking oven), herb and vegetable garden, orchard, furnished wagon house and vineyard.
Well-trained guides in period clothing present educational programs to adult and school groups.
Visitors can make use of the picnic and braai facilities, the two lapas (outdoor entertaining space) and the hall can be hired for family celebrations or work-related functions. Each lapa can accommodate 40 people and includes 16 braai stands, and the hall has room for 180 people.
There is a farmer’s market every Saturday morning from 06h00 to 09h00.
The Museum is located in Silverton on the corner of Pretoria Road and Watermeyer Street. The main entrance is situated in Watermeyer Street.
