Jan Celliers Park
The Jan Celliers Park is one of the oldest parks in Pretoria. Jan Celliers Park was designed by Harry Bruins-Lich, director of Pretoria Parks for 25 years. The park was named after Jan Francois Elias Celliers, (Jan F.E. Celliers), (12 January 1865 – 1 June 1940) an Afrikaans-language poet, essayist, dramatist and reviewer.
This park, also known as Protea Park or the ‘Fairy Park’, contains indigenous plants and water features, and offers a spectacular view of the city. This park is hidden away in the Groenkloof suburb.
In the early 1960’s Mr Bruins-Lich and his men designed a park on what was still an undeveloped slope.
Jan FE Celliers Park, also known as Proteapark, was meant to be an indigenous park, and the hill’s original flora provides some beauties, like the wild seringa, Burkea africana, unavailable commercially.
