International Primate Rescue
International Primate Rescue started life as the Marmoset Welfare Foundation in March 1996 in Polokwane, where founder Sue Mousley had been caring for primates since 1990.
The sanctuary, which relocated from Polokwane to Pretoria, in 2010 currently cares for over 100 primates, including Marmosets, Tamarins, Capuchins, Macaques, Squirrel Monkeys, Mona Monkeys, Patas Monkeys and Grey Mouse Lemurs.
History and Timeline:
- 1996 – Started life as the Marmoset Welfare Foundation in Polokwane.
- 1998 – Receives its first non-marmoset primate; Bobby the Bolivian squirrel monkey.
- 2001 – Moves into larger property to accommodate its growing size. Adopts its current name, “International Primate Rescue”
- 2002 – Receives its first international case; Iris the Patas monkey arrives from Israel
- 2006 – Board of trustees in the uk – Charity Number
- 2010 – Undertook a full scale relocation from Polokwane to its current site in Pretoria
- 2013 – First Annual UK fund raiser held
- 2014 – Final payment on the purchase of the property made in August
