The crucial issue of land reform
Economic development has become one of the key issues in South Africa, particularly with the financial downgrades by ratings. The National Development Plan (NDP) is the latest socio-economic policy programme that projects a long-term vision and the action plans for a sustainable and inclusive development path for South Africa by 2030.
The key areas were listed throughout the 15 chapters of the NDP. This article places “an integrated and inclusive rural economy” (chapter 6) at the centre of analysis and outlines the importance of land reform and rural development as an economic growth tool. Considering that a large proportion of South Africa’s population has been subjected to racial domination and racial dispossession, accelerating land reform is pertinent to achieving socio-economic transformation, including eliminating poverty and reducing inequality.
