Pupils to display oratorial fireworks ahead of the Olieven Academic Awards
Pupils from high schools across Olievenhoutbosch will set out to win audiences around to their way of thinking when they take part in an inter-schools debate competition in Centurion on Saturday morning.
The debate, taking place at Forest Hill City Shopping Centre, is being held as part of the build-up to the 2016 Olieven Academic Awards (OAA), which aim to encourage educational excellence in historically disadvantaged schools in the community.
Participants from Steve Tshwete, Seshegong and Olievenhoutbosch secondary schools will display their oratorial fireworks in front of Saturday shoppers in The Hub court between 9am and 1pm. The best speaker and winning school will be awarded at the main OAA prizegiving on October 29.
According to Forest Hill City acting general manager Annah Moremela, the debate component of the initiative is designed to develop critical thinking, teamwork, logical argumentation and public speaking skills.
“As a centre, we are focused on supporting key educational initiatives,” said Moremela.
“And this opportunity is particularly exciting because we are helping to develop vital skills among our country’s future leaders.”
