City clean-up operation underway
As part of the National Clean-up and Recycle Week, the City of Tshwane yesterday (Tuesday 11 September) kick-started its clean-up operation with a two-day waste recycling exhibition at the Jubilee Shopping Mall in Hammanskraal.
The exhibition is aimed at educating the residents about the purpose of the buyback centers and the garden refuse sites. In addition, it is hoped that the informative display will further empower the community with the knowledge and skills concerning the following:
- Recycling
- Separation of waste at source
- Types of waste and the correct disposal methods
- Waste collection services and schedule
- Illegal dumping and its health effects
The primary purpose of the National Clean-up and Recycle Week is to increase an awareness of the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling.
Amongst the lined up activities of the Clean-up Week is an initiative designed to remove harmful substances along the Pienaar river in Mamelodi. Spearheaded by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the initiative will see the Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Agriculture and Environmental Management, Councillor Michael Mkhari, joining the members of the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) tomorrow (September 13) to free the river from unwanted material and dirt. The clean-up team will meet at Melodi Park, Erf 6959 Lunga Street Mamelodi West at 10:00.
On Thursday, 14 September 2017 at 09h00 an information session whose objective is to educate hawkers about the negative impact littering has on humans and the environment will be held by the City’s Environmental Management Department at Kopanong complex.
Another activity of significance occurring under the auspices of the recycling programme is the City’s handover of a recycling station and 5 colour coded 240 litre bins to Meetse a Bophelo Primary School in Mamelodi West at 11h30. The City was approached by the school with a request to establish a recycling station. The school’s acknowledgment of the importance of recycling has prompted a handover of the station on 19 September 2017. “The city is delighted about this school recycling initiative and it is believed that this awareness campaign will go a long way in educating the residents to consciously recycle waste in order to reduce the pressure on our city’s landfills,” said Cllr Mkhari.
