Diners Club launches 2015 Restaurant Guide
Pretoria’s cream of the culinary crop awarded at Restaurant Guide 2015 exclusive launch.
The Rossouw’s by Diners Club South African Restaurant Guide 2015 was launched with much excitement in Johannesburg on Monday.
Some 20 restaurants have been awarded five-star status in the 2015 edition of Rossouw’s Restaurant Guide, published in association with Diners Club and launched at the Steyn City Golf Club in Johannesburg today (3 November). The country’s top establishments, as per the latest guide, include 13 in the Western Cape, six in Gauteng and one in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Achieving five stars in the guide is a real feat – only 20 awards were given to the more than 300 restaurants reviewed,” said JP Rossouw, publisher of Rossouw’s by Diners Club South African Restaurant Guide 2015.
The guide is a comprehensive, up-to-date and authoritative reference to restaurants around South Africa. Featuring more than 300 restaurants across all genres, the guide offers a selection of quality establishments that have each been reviewed by a select panel of critics. Reviewers visit every restaurant anonymously and pay for the meal, for ultimate independence and integrity.
Fans of the guide will see it now has a new format to echo its new status as a sister title to the popular Platter’s by Diners Club South African Wine Guide 2015. That said, Rossouw’s by Diners Club South African Restaurant Guide 2015 still keeps to its tradition of rating like with like when it comes to restaurants. Casual places are compared with other casual places, and not with fine dining establishments. There are four categories: luxury, smart casual, casual and ‘on the edge’.
Anna Trapido, renowned food critic and editor of Rossouw’s by Diners Club South African Restaurant Guide 2015, believes the guide reflects South Africa’s dynamic and diverse culinary culture. “We are increasingly enjoying flavour repertoires that reflect our glorious terroir,” she says. “We are blessed with a great mix of iconic chefs of long standing, and superb young talent. Our award winners reflect this deliciously inviting combination.”
The following Pretoria-restaurants were awarded a five-star status:
*Restaurant Mosaic, Elandsfontein, Pretoria (Luxury)
*Ritrovo, Waterkloof Heights, Pretoria (Smart Casual)
Other restaurants in Gauteng awarded five stars:
*Five Hundred, Sandhurst (Luxury)
*Japa, Rivonia (Casual)
*The Local Grill, Parktown North (Smart Casual)
*Qunu Grill, Sandhurst (Luxury)
The Rossouw’s by Diners Club South African Restaurant Guide 2015 also awarded a number of chefs during the launch event, with Pretoria’s Abou Bakar Fofana from La Madeleine in Pretoria receiving the Superior Service award.
