“Mens of Monster” Pretoria Book Launch
On Thursday the 25th of January, Graffiti Books & Stationery in the Lynnwood Bridge shopping complex launched Carla van der Spuy’s “Mens of monster: Die psige van ‘n misdadiger”.
van der Spuy, who currently resides in Pretoria’s neighbouring town of Hartbeespoort, is a freelance journalist whose work have been published in many popular South African newspapers and magazines. van der Spuy obtained a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch in History of Art and Textile Design, and was rewarded with the Caxton Magazine Excellence Journalist of the Year award in 2008.
In “Mens of Monster”, the perspectives of several experts – including psychologists and criminologists, prisoners and their loved ones, as well as more isotheral types whose opinions may be regarded as highly controversial – are presented in an enjoyable, non-fictional must-read book. Although some of the theories in “Mens of Monster” may be regarded as, in turn, scientific and pseudoscientific, the book tries to consider all possibilities objectively.
Attendees got the opportunity to listen to van der Spuy discuss the process of making as well as what she learned from writing the book, as well as ask her questions afterwards.
Wine & light snacks were served at the event.
