People in the CBD might have witnessed jets and helicopters hovering above the sky over the weekend, which were part of an air show at the Waterkloof Air force Base.

Africa Aerospace and Defence hosted its 8th annual air show from the 21st until the 22nd of September 2014. “In honour of the country’s 20 years of freedom and democracy, exhibitors and air show attendees will be taken down memory lane and shown how over the past 20 years, the Aerospace and Defence sector has been part of building and contributing to our freedom and democracy“ said AMD chairperson, Dean Mogale.

The adrenaline felt across spectators from all the action of the day was like being part of a movie. We adjusted our camera lenses to zoom, others looked through binoculars for a close up of the scene as soldiers and pilots re-enacted a mini war; as parachute teams jumped out of helicopters, as the Gripen and Hercules demonstrated air tricks and other cool things that brave human beings do to protect South African territory.
An interesting addition at this year’s air show was a ten metre tall armoured Parabot that is said to be part of a mission to raise awareness of Africa’s endangered wildlife. People were encouraged to take pictures with the Parabot and at the same time showing the nation how the military can protect wildlife by using the latest technology.
This weekends air show was educational for all of us, including getting absorbed in conversations amongst on-lookers about the arms deal to the weight of the Mango plane that flew right above our heads were interesting.
