MISSIONVALE CARE CENTRE

In 1988 Sister Ethel Normoyle, a member of the Little Company of Mary, came to Missionvale eager to share the gospel values of compassion and love with the poor. She started humbly and set up a school and basic clinic under a tree. A group of concerned business leaders visited the area, resulting in the building of 3 small rooms for the school and a clinic. With the help of a local SA Trust (Missionvale SA), her own Order and contributions from organisations, her family and friends in Ireland, Sister Ethel has developed Missionvale Care Centre into a place which provides love and care for the poor and destitute, with particular emphasis on those living with HIV / Aids.

The Centre operates in the extremely poor informal shackland of Missionvale in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The area has one of the highest rates of unemployment (±80 %) and HIV / Aids infections in the region. Its population live in conditions of extreme poverty, without access to basic sanitation. The bucket system is still in use here and there are only 16 water taps from which the densely populated community is able to draw water for daily use.

The Care Centre currently provides the following services to the community of Missionvale:

• Primary School (Junior & Senior Grade R, Grade 1 – 7)
• Extramural activities including ballroom dancing, choir, music, reading clubs, chess, ballet, netball and soccer
• Adult Basic Education and Training
• Skills Development (Vegetable Gardens and Crafts)
• Health Services including a Clinic, Physiotherapy and Optometrist Service
• Community Based Health Practitioners, HIV / Aids awareness, education and counselling, home based care
• Nutrition & Wellness Unit
• Clothing Warehouse
• Spiritual liturgical upliftment and development
• Community Hall
• Christmas Cheer Projects

The Missionvale Care Centre has been a beacon of hope to the people of Missionvale for 27 years. Its purpose is to provide essential health, social and spiritual services and develop a sense of pride and ownership in the people of Missionvale. The Centre concentrates on the development of children (particularly those orphaned and vulnerable). and uses all the resources available to treat, alleviate and most importantly, prevent the scourge of HIV / Aids.

OUR VISION

• To enter into the lives of the poor in their pain, loneliness and despair.
• To recognise that we have done nothing to deserve our prosperity as they have done nothing to deserve their deprivation
• To reach out a hand of solidarity, compassion and love, filled not with empty platitudes, but with food, medicine, learning and hope
• To learn from the sick and the vulnerable, the great lessons of humility and simplicity
• To learn from ourselves the limits of our charity and the boundaries of our selflessness
• To know and believe that a Care Centre, within our city and within our hearts, is only the beginning, but a beginning where anything is possible

OBJECTIVES

• To provide essential health, social and spiritual care
• To provide a solid academic education
• To concentrate on the development of children, especially those orphaned and vulnerable
• To promote a stable and harmonious home and community environment through developing a sense of pride and ownership in the people of Missionvale
