The Great Moscow Circus Big Top Goes Up!!
21 February 2017 – With only 2 nights to go until the opening night of the circus, the mighty 40-metre diameter Great Moscow Circus Big Top tent went up at the Boardwalk in the heart of Summerstrand, signalling the arrival in Port Elizabeth of the greatest circus show on earth, which was sold out in Johannesburg and Cape
Town recently.
The Big Top arrived at the Boardwalk alongside shipping containers from all over the world. Inside them all the magic and excitement of The Great Moscow Circus: tons of props; boxes and boxes of gorgeous costumes; swathes of curtains; hundreds of lights, and everything it takes to turn on the magic of the circus.
Under the watchful eye of tent master, Daniel Diorio and tent boss, David Meatchem, the spectacular Great Moscow Circus Big Top was pitched on 17m high king poles. Two hundred tent pegs were hammered into place, and hundreds of metres of steel cables and ropes were secured.
Commenting on the rich history of Russian circuses, tent boss David Meatchem told guests that traditional large tents, commonly known as Big Tops, were introduced in the mid-19th century as touring circuses superseded static venues. They eventually became the most common venues for circuses, and remain so to the present day.
The Great Moscow Circus Big Top is however a far cry from the canvas tents of old – it is big and mighty, air conditioned, has the latest in LED lighting, and features crystal clear cutting edge sound.
“Audiences can expect a nail-biting traditional European atmosphere where they are never more than 11 metres from the action,” said Meatchem.
The Great Moscow Circus opens to the public at the Boardwalk on Thursday 23 February 2017 with an all-new, sensational, two-hour world premiere program, featuring 19 incredible acts representing the best of the world’s greatest circus stars.
“We are very honoured to be hosting The Great Moscow Circus here in Port Elizabeth. Sun International is honoured to have Russia’s finest in the midst of Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Siphokazi Ngombane, PR and Promotions Manager Boardwalk.
Russia’s most-famous calling card, The Great Moscow Circus guarantees breath-taking, affordable, family entertainment that delivers all the thrills and fun of the circus of yesteryear, with all the skill and daring of today’s circus heroes.
