Crisis phone number wrong
More than a year after changing its phone number, the Nelson Mandela Bay Beach Office – which is alerted to drownings – has not updated its billboards or notified the 10111 call centre, fire department or traffic department.
Yesterday, after numerous calls from The Herald, officials were scrambling to distribute the right number to water rescue role-players.
The control room supervisor at the 10111 centre, who did not give his name, said other water rescue units would be called should they not be able to contact the Beach Office.
The correct number to phone in the event of an emergency is:
(041)506 -1423.
