Included in the stadium’s corporate social investment (CSI) programme is the renovation of the Vukukhanye Edu-Care situated in Vuku Road, KwaZakhele, in Port Elizabeth.

The project will include renovating and fixing broken restrooms, painting the premises and creating a ‘creative corner’ with room for some newly sponsored books and toys.

“We are very thankful for the support as my children will now benefit from the project. We don’t have money to upgrade our facility. This is such a big help to us,” said Ntombekhaya Penkese, the founder of Vukukhanye Edu-Care.

The Vukukhanye Edu-Care provides child care services to 24 children, between the ages of three-months and six-years-old and is also used as an aftercare for primary school pupils.

The NMB Stadium also supported the First Annual Walmer Street Soccer Tournament Monday 15 June in Yoyo Street, Walmer Township. The initiative was supported by various stakeholders, namely Izizwe Projects, ACVV, Department of Social Development, Masifunde and Department of Sports.

The stadium sponsored soccer balls, yellow cards and red cards as well as whistles. Young aspiring boys and girls between the ages of 14 years and 18 years old were divided into teams of five players. There were 16 teams. The players selected came from foster care homes, as well as learners from Walmer High School.

The aim of the project was to celebrate the youth of Walmer Township and empower them to live a healthier and active lifestyle through sport.

The NMB Stadium will also contribute food parcels towards the annually held girls’ camp hosted by A Vision for Women, from the June 26 to June 29. The camp was started in 2011 and is run by women from previously disadvantaged high schools who are giving back to their communities by mentoring young girls. The camp hosts girls from 13 high schools from Nelson Mandela Bay.
