Bay cop shot in neck wins Star award
A critically wounded police constable who drove for 1.3km, blood streaming from neck and face wounds, in a desperate attempt to save his colleague’s life after they came under fire while on patrol, is one of Nelson Mandela Bay’s top cops.
Constable Mongezi Mqina, 36, of Kwazakhele police station – whose partner died despite his efforts to save her – and the Uitenhage K9’s Warrant Officer Jacques Adlem, 41, were among the Eastern Cape’s top seven police officers honoured at the Star of the Year awards in East London earlier this week.
Mqina was shot in the neck and jaw last year and drove for 1.3km to the Zwide satellite police station, dragging himself into the office to call for help before collapsing in a pool of blood.
Thandi Bambiso, 33, who was shot in the head and chest, died.
