The Otter Trail, Tsitsikamma, Garden Route

Test your level of fitness on the famous 5 day 42.5 km Otter Trail. Rated as one of the best hiking trails in the world, expect an abundance of dramatic scenery from rugged coastal coastline, forests, pristine fynbos, sandy beaches with secluded bays, tricky river crossings and all manner of wildlife.

However, this world class hike is no roll over and will test your level of fitness to the full.

Of late, runners are tackling the trail and doing it all in a matter of hours, but they are sure to miss all the beauty, the small plants, the birds, the views and most of all, the “alone” time that is a welcome break from our busy lives.

The hike starts from the Tsitsikamma National Park and ends in Natures Valley.

Limited numbers and massive popularity mean it’s not unusual to have to book up to two years in advance. However, it’s well worth the wait. The best time to hike is the warmer months between September and April. If you can, book a date when low tide on the fourth day is around midday.

You must be between 12 and 65 years old and able to hike up to 14 km a day over steep and rough terrain, under any weather conditions, carrying a heavy backpack. Group sizes are limited to 12.

For trail costs and booking information: Tel 012-426-5111, e-mail reservations@sanparks.org, web www.sanparks.org.

Directions: Drive on the N2 from Plettenberg Bay towards Port Elizabeth for about 20 kms until you see the Tsitsikamma National Park Signboard.
