The South African Department of Education has announced that in 2010, South African school’s winter holiday period will be extended to ensure that schools are closed during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This is to prevent pupil and teacher absenteeism during the matches, as well as lighten the load on the public transport system.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be held from the 11 June, with the final match and closing ceremony being on 11 July. The school term will end just two days before kickoff and start again two days after the tournament final and closing ceremonies.
