NVTrust Newsflash 16th October
As part of the International Coastal Clean-up week, an initiative driven by Plastics SA, the Nature’s Valley Trust held the annual Kurland Village Clean-up on Friday 21 September.
The turn-out is always outstanding and this year was no exception as over 300 people arrived to do their bit and collect rubbish. The event was opened by Ian McKhenie from Willing Workers In South Africa (WWISA) as he welcomed all the volunteers into a buzzing school hall at Crags Primary.
Vernon Gibbs-Hall from Eden District Municipality gave an informative speech about the facts of rubbish, recycling and decomposition. Shortly after the welcome, the volunteers and students poured out of the hall, collected a glove and a bag each and dispersed to different parts of the community to begin collecting rubbish. All told, they managed to fill approximately 450 bags, making an impressive but concerning pile of rubbish that was taken away by the municipality later that afternoon. Amongst these hard workers were the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Bitou Municipality who certainly did their part in collecting rubbish.
This has become an annual event since its inception in 2002 and although we are the main instigators and organisers it would not be possible without the help and sponsorships from the following people and organisations: WWISA for helping organise the event; Eden District Municipality for sponsoring food and drinks, Bitou Municipality and Hunter’s Hotel for sponsoring the hundreds of hotdogs, cold-drinks and snacks and Plastics SA for the gloves, bags and more cold-drinks.
The rest of the day belonged to each and every individual from the community, businesses and organisations surrounding Kurland that arrived to help make a cleaner South Africa, especially the local ladies who cooked over 800 hotdogs. We would like to thank them for their immense contribution.
This event was a huge success and it was really heart-warming to see so many community members getting involved with the clean-up to make their community, and this small part of South Africa, a cleaner place. Now if only we could get all communities around South Africa to do the same. We at the Trust have done our bit to clean South Africa, we hope that you too have made some contribution, no matter how big or small, towards the cleaning of this beautiful country during International Clean-Up Month with the 15th being International Coastal Clean-Up Day.
