Bitou Valley Foundation

For its people, its inhabitants and their environment.

The Bitou Wetland and Valley is situated in the town of Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route – one of South Africa’s most popular tourist destinations and an important part of the Cape Floristic Region, the smallest yet most diverse biodiversity hotspot in the world.

The Bitou Wetland system feeds and is vital to maintaining the health of the Keurbooms Estuary, ranked 18th in South Africa, out of 256 functional estuaries, in terms of conservation value. The wetland has been described as “the most valuable ecological resource of the entire catchment, the Bitou marsh, 654ha in entirety”

“the most valuable ecological resource of the entire catchment, the Bitou marsh, 654ha in entirety"

Being situated just outside of the town of Plettenberg Bay, and directly accessible from the main N2 highway, the Bitou Valley is considered a gateway to the Garden Route with very high visitor numbers and high profile.

The development potential for the Bitou Valley was investigated through funding received from the Table Mountain Fund, WWF-SA and a private property owner in the area. The potential is vast and includes environmental, social and tourism aspects which can all work together to enhance the conservation status of the wetland, improve its functioning and benefit the environment and people of this area. The Bitou Valley could become a ‘blue-print’ for applying a triple bottom line approach to environmental sustainability, incorporating environmental, social and economic factors.
