Who we Are

We are a non-profit organisation who aim to stimulate the educational development of young people from underprivileged backgrounds who live in previously disadvantaged communities in the Bitou District.

By creating better opportunities for youngsters to participate in the labour market, we aim to improve the current situation of social and economic distress.

We have developed a three-fold strategy to achieve our mission

1. An individual support programme for selected children

2. Setting up educational projects with teaching staff and volunteers, and

3. A parental empowerment programme.

We help children choose a positive path in life, and support them to make this their new reality

We are currently conducting research in all our local primary and high schools in order to assess the need to start a local “Trade school”.

One of our projects, which now runs as an independent business, is located in the Crags on the way to Monkey Land.

The business is called ‘Siya Phambili’ and is run by Born in Africa mothers. They manufacture beautiful handmade beadwork jewellery.

Our dynamic team is focused on providing educational support at all levels

The team consists of our General Coordinator, Isabelle Brink, who is supported by:

Fiona Wilson looks after the social wellbeing of the children, follows up our mentors and is the Social Coordinator.

All our educational programs as well as tertiary education, volunteers, extra mural camps and outings are the responsibility of Belinda Coram as the Education Coordinator.

Our mentors are Lien Roman (Crags), Rose Martin (Crags), Michael Nkohola (Crags), Joyce Raye (Crags), Marita Harker (Kranshoek), Magdalena Jacobs (Kranshoek), Sarija Bewee (Plett Sec, Wittedrift, Harkerville) and Ferdi Bewee (Plett Sec, Wittedrift, Harkerville)

Lien, Marita and Magdalena also work as reading assistants in 2 schools.

At BIA we offer children better opportunities to finish their school careers successfully. We do this by creating structures that help find a way out of the existing spiral of poverty and social exclusion. This way we provide youngsters with better prospects for the future.

The child adoption sponsoring program has been running successfully for more than 7 years. At the moment we have more than 400 children sponsored around Plettenberg Bay.

With the 250 Euro your Godchild would receive each year from you, they would get a school uniform, attend camps, enjoy holiday outings and receive monthly mentorship and guidance.

The camps for the older children always have a career based theme as many of them need to make choices about which career to follow. The younger children are always taught a life skill, an important tool to guide them through their youth and enable them to make the correct choices when faced with challenges.

How will my donation be used?

As we are a non profit organisation we are 100% dependant on donations. Our projects include the following:

BIA supports and organizes many different projects and activities: the individual support program (Adoption Program), the education projects, the reading classes, swimming classes, computer class support, building of classrooms, educational excursions and sewing classes. We also do parent working and community activities.

As a donor you may specify which of our projects you would like to support. Should you wish to donate an amount anonymously, BIA will channel the funds where most needed.
