Well-loved local dies in horror crash
Plettenberg Bay businessman Cobus Roos, 36, died instantly on June 7 when his motorcycle collided head-on with a truck on the N2 just past the Engen entrance to the town. The accident happened around 12:30 and was heard by learners and staff at the adjacent Plett Primary School.
Roos’s bike, a BMW GS 800, was embedded in the truck’s under-carriage, and traffic was diverted away from the site for a couple of hours while emergency workers worked at clearing the scene.
Eyewitnesses said that Roos must have made an error of judgement while overtaking a vehicle travelling in an easterly direction down the hill. The truck that he struck was travelling westwards.
Roos is survived by his wife, Juanda, and daughter Xanthe, 4. His memorial service was held at Plett Community Church on Friday June 11.
He will be sorely missed by the local biking fraternity.
Consolation for Juanda Roos
John Mulder of Plett’s Metal Detective team brought CXPRESS the good news that he had found Cobus Roos’s wedding ring at the accident site last Friday. A friend of the Roos family, Ryan Best, took the photos here and wrote:
‘The one thing that Juanda wanted was his wedding ring and we have been praying since Monday to recover it. When we went down to the crash site on Thursday to erect the cross, I found pieces of Cobus’s watch while walking around.
‘I knew that if anybody could find the ring, it would be John and Erica Mulder – I’ve heard many stories before of them recovering lost possessions. I gave John a call as soon as I got back to the office and told him the story.
‘John said he would pop down in the morning but was not too positive that he would find it. But after about 15 minutes of walking around the site, he had located Cobus’s ring. I thank John and Erica on behalf of Juanda for this miraculous recovery.
‘Juanda also thanks the vast number of people that have supported her through this tragic time. We are overwhelmed by the support the community has given to her, Xanthe, and the Louw and Roos Families. To God be all the glory – Ryan.’
(If you have lost something dear that the Mulders might help you find, give John or Erica a call on 044 533 2117.)
