Update: Dog abuse case postponed
A warrant of arrest for Petrus ‘Piet’ Meyer (67) was held back by Knysna magistrate, Clifford Maseti. Meyer did not show up in court on Thursday, July 10 and the case of animal cruelty against him was postponed to Thursday, August 14. If he again fails to show up in court the warrant will be enforced.
Animal lovers across the country following the high-profile dog-dragging case are concerned that the charge against Meyer, according to the police, only concerns the abuse of one of his dogs, yet two were injured. The Ridgeback bitch Gina was more seriously injured than the Shar Pei/Bullmastiff male, but both were confiscated by the Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS) and treated by Dr Mark Shortreed of Knysna Veterinary Clinic.
The case against Meyer concerns an incident in Brenton-on-Lake, where he was a resident at the time, when he “ran” two of his dogs on a leash next to his sports car after they had escaped from his yard. A confrontation ensued when eyewitnesses who saw at least one dog Gina being dragged next to the car, approached him. At that stage Meyer had already taken Benji home in the same way, as witnessed by another resident.
