Tireless overnight fight against fire
Bitou fire services and members of the local community worked tirelessly to bring a wild fire, which started raging between Hakerville and Plettenberg Bay last night, Wednesday January 18, under control.
Firefighters worked throughout the night to douse the flames and managed to largely do so by this morning, Thursday January 19, but there has however since been some flareups in certain areas. There are also still smouldering areas which firefighters are keeping an eye on.
Residents also assisted with providing those fighting the flames with water and food and also helped with relocating animals in possible danger.
According the the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association (SCFPA) members of the Bitou fire services battled to bring the fire under control as the area is overgrown with wattle and other invasive species. Access to the area was also difficult.
Local fire management units and SANParks have also been assisting in fire fighting efforts.
The SCFPA also has teams on standby to assist today, Thursday January 19, and also arranged with a private service provider to be on standby with a helicopter should the need arise.
Local Working on Fire aerial resources are currently involved in fire fighting efforts elsewhere in the Western Cape.
