Plett fire rages through Robberg
Plettenberg Bay residents were evacuated from their homes as fires raged from the Kruisfontein into Robberg.
It is believed the Knysna fire jumped across the N2 into Kruisfontein and from there burned it’s way through Harkerville to Kranshoek, reaching Robberg by nightfall – eventually making its way to right up to the beach.
With gale force winds reaching up to around 120km per hour, the fire could not be controlled and evacuation efforts were effectively implemented. Many houses and farms were lost in the inferno.
Residents in the Whale Rock area, the end of Longships towards Robberg, and the Schoongezicht, Brackenridge and River Club estates were evacuated effectively.
The greatest tragedy in Plett was the passing of Bradley Richards, 24, a volunteer firefighter who succumbed to his injuries after battling the Plettenberg Bay fire.
