So, it’s safe to greet Spring, officially: Welcome Spring! And welcome to you all – back at your screen reading our newsletter!
New Mailing System:
After two months of major hassles sending out the newsletter (thanks to the Spam filters installed by a number of Internet Service Providers, including Mweb), we have decided to try a new system. Am really holding thumbs that it works well and that there are no more hiccups for you folk getting the newsletter each month … am anxiously awaiting the moment the “Send” button is pressed! Thanks to the ladies who allowed themselves to be used as guinea pigs! Should anyone receive this mail who is not on our list, we apologise and request that you click on the Unsubscribe link below. Thank you!
“Creative Crafters”:
As mentioned last month, Kathy, a lovely local crafter, has begun a delightful Plett group called Creative Crafters – the ladies meet every second Tuesday evening from 19.00 till about 21.00 for coffee, chats and to have a chance to create with others – they normally bring their current projects and often, help each other along. It’s really a lot of fun and special to just be “sisters” for the evening. The next meeting is on Tuesday 20th September – if you are interested in joining please contact us to let Kathy have your phone number to add to the whatsapp group. Whilst there is no charge for the evening usually held at Kathy’s home, you are welcome to contribute to help cover tea/coffee/biscuit costs. Some good news is that we at wool&more will be subsidising the cost of a bumper evening every so often and will be doing so on the 20th September at the Beacon Island Resort (to give Kathy a break!) – tea & coffee and savoury snack platters will be served so the evening there will cost you a mere R20-00 each – wool&more will pay the rest. Please let us know as soon as possible whether you would be interested in joining the group and whether you would like to attend the evening at the Beacon Island. We need to give final numbers of participants attending on Thursday 15th September. Payment of your R20-00 prior to the event will secure your booking at this great evening. Look forward to seeing you! (Hint: there is a surprise in store for you!)
Parking:
The old gramophone is playing again …. After a number of ladies (young and old) have complained to me about the lack of parking in Gibb Street, I am at my wits end! As you all know by now, the problem is due to the municipality employees and Eden District Health Department employees (especially) who are also tenants of the building, parking in the street right outside the shop all day long. They of course manage to evade getting parking tickets and are hugely unco-operative, despite there being other options available for them to park their cars. We have been to the Traffic Department, spoken to Law Enforcement, nagged the landlord and begged and pleaded … to no avail. The situation is not only frustrating but on a practical basis, affects our business and your ability to easily purchase yarn. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to assist, we will be very grateful.
Community Project Program:
Our on-going projects are for knitted / crocheted toys for the local clinics as well as for newborn baby beanies. In last month’s newsletter, we posted an easy pattern for a knitted ball. We are also very happy to continue to receive knitted or crocheted strips for the making of blankets for the needy in Plett – any width, any colour but must be 1m in length (and preferably in garter stitch). If you sew them together for us, that would be a bonus (but not a prerequisite!)
Summer new yarns:
We have just had news from Elle that they are launching a new yarn called Tropical which is a synthetic, beautifully coloured and soft yarn in six different colours, in 100gm balls (much like a thinner version of Mischief). They are also bringing out two new colours in Charity DK, new prints in Cotton-On DK and Seriously Chunky and some Pure Gold DK prints that look fabulous. They have also imported plastic crochet hooks in a set of 5 sizes: 8, 9, 10, 12 and 15mm – these are at a really good price, are a good quality, worth having and already in store.
New and exciting Knit-a-Long:
Just in!!! The first of nine beautiful knitted squares, using the gorgeous Elle Pure Gold DK has just arrived in our inbox. If you wish to receive the link for the pattern each week (9 weeks in all), please go to the bottom of this newsletter, click “update your preferences” and tick on the Knit-a-Long box or just email us with your request. You won’t be sorry!
Crochet workshop: Fantasy Blanket:
Our in-house crochet teacher, Annette, has devised a great workshop for all those who are able to crochet but want to “up their game”: She will be holding a four hour workshop teaching all the skills and techniques required to produce a gorgeous fantasy blanket using cottons and bamboo yarn – a real work of art! She has offered two alternate dates / times: Tuesday 27th September from 10 to 1pm or Thursday 29th September from 12 – 4. Refreshments will be provided and Annette requires a minimum of 3 participants for each workshop. The cost is to be finalised but will be in the range of R350-00 per person. This excludes your 3mm crochet hook and a minimum of 10 brightly coloured cotton / bamboo yarn (available at wool&more). It is suggested that you also bring a notebook and pen. Please book early as space is limited….
Trading Hours:
Monday to Friday from 10 till 4 and every first and last Saturday (and all public holidays) from 9.30 till 12.30.
Holiday Planned:
This is just the reminder I said I would give you that I have planned a short get-away in October. After much thought and consideration, I have decided to close the shop for seven trading days and have a complete rest (not worrying about how things are going here). In all my (many) years in retail, I have never closed for a holiday so it feels like pushing the boundaries quite substantially! Last date of trading: Wednesday 12th October and re-opening Monday 24th October. Intending to spend some special time with my family. Thanks for your indulgence – can’t wait!!
The Olympics came and went and the best I got out of it was to watch this video … only if you are up to a really good laugh.. Enjoy it lots!
There were some other things we wanted to share today but this is long enough for now. Next month, there will be instructions for the perfect knitted button hole (personally researched by Joy!) as well as news on the Katia Summer range that has just, just arrived and not even been unpacked yet – pop in very soon to see and feel. It looks quite phenomenal! By early October, hopefully some of the new yarn and prints by Elle would have arrived too so that we can let you have those details.
Previous newsletters & unsubscribe:
Should you no longer wish to receive our newsletter, please just send us an email with your name and we will (sadly) remove your details. Also, all past newsletters are on our website – please do have a look.
Until October, we wish you fun and laughter and oodles of creativity. Keep knitting and crocheting in Summer – it’s a delight using the gorgeous cottons available.
See you soon and sent with love.
Joy Sachs
