Almost half of 2016 is done and dusted … have you achieved what you set out to do this year? There is still time to tick some items off your “to-do list” with planning, focus and intension! That’s where we are headed… We had some great specials on in May and they were very well received – a number of ladies were delighted with their bargains!
Crochet-a-Long:
Elle recently launched their first Crochet-a-Long where they send two square patterns per week to be crocheted, to make up an exquisite blanket in stunning colours from the Family Knit, double knit range. We decided to send these square patterns to our local Plett ladies as a trial and they have been so well received that we have attached the links to the first seven squares (12 in total) below for you to try doing and to enjoy this blanket. The next five square patterns will be in our June newsletter for you. Let us know how you progress please. We have just had word from Elle that the response to the Crochet-a-Long was so incredible, they have decided to launch a Knit-a-Long. At time of sending this email, no details have come in so we hope to let you know all about it in June.

Community Project Program:
There has been great activity over the past month for various projects: Happy Day Creche in The Crags received just over 50 beanies made by all of you, through the Lions Club. The kids were apparently delighted and Vijver from the Lions, who headed this project, was amazed at the sense of style these little ones showed! Her letter of thanks is below – please know that all who contributed are hugely appreciated. Thank you so much.
“Thanks to Joy (Sachs) the Plett Baia Formosa Lions Club brought some happiness to the Happy Day Crèche. Joy and her knitting club got to work and hand knitted 50 beanies which they donated to the Plett Baia Formosa Lions club so that it can reach the needy in Our community.
I can remember as a child my mom telling me that I will lose all my body heat if I do not wear a hat on cold days – I am sure many of you can relate! Thought this is not entirely true, we lose only about 10% of our body heat through our heads, it is still a good idea to wear a hat on cold and especially windy days. Wearing a hat not only helps us hold onto our body head but it is beneficial for our skin as well, especially for those with thin or very short hair.
Young kids are often the first to get a cold in the winter season and when one gets it then they all get it. So if a warm beanie can keep at least one child free from a cold this winter season then it is a job well done.
On the 18th of April 2016, Vijver Jonck of the Plett Lions Club went to visit the Happy Day Crèche to hand out the beanies. Pink, blue, green, yellow and more – the beanies – each one different, each one special! The laughter of the children where infectious and Vijver sat on the floor with 50 kids surrounding her trying to fit the perfect beanie to the perfect head. After an hour of fit and match each of the happy faces sported a nice warm beanie and every teacher was inundated with “Mine is the pretties look at me first”.
The Plett Baia Formosa Lions Club also made sure that the Beanies where accompanied by a goody bag and each child got a nice parcel with some sweeties and chippies. Even though Monday was an unseasonably warm day the kiddies refused to take off their beanies. While Vijver was still there a mother arrived to pick up her young child and she was speechless to find that he now sported a brand new beanie. She expressed her thanks to Joy and the Lions Club stating she has not yet had enough money to get winter gear as her son decided to grow quite a bit in the last year.
Her thanks and the realization that there are so many that live pay check to pay check yet again made it so clear that we should all do what we can for those of Our Community.
Joy Sachs and her knitting club always appreciates if anyone has any left-over wool that they can donate to Joy at Wool & More and they will make sure your left-over wool is put to good use! Knitting beanies and scarfs to warm up Our Community is just part of the good work that Joy’s hands reach.
The Plett Baia Formosa Lions Club would like to formally thanks Joy and her ladies for donating the end product of months of hard work. Every beanie, every stitch is appreciated.
If you know of a school, crèche, old age home that has not yet had a helping hand from the outside, please contact the Plett Baia Formosa Lions Club, we might be small but we are mighty and WE SERVE!”
It’s a pleasure to be associated with your amazing work at Lions and if not for the ladies who contribute their time, skill and energy into knitting and crocheting beanies, blankies and jerseys, we would not be able to assist the way we do!!
The maroon beanies for Harkerville Premier (Primary) school are coming in – we currently have just over 50 of the 80 required. Thanks again, to everyone who has so kindly knitted these beanies, especially to Shelley for her enduring assistance in not only knitting them herself, but also encouraging others to do so. Also special thanks to Yolle who lives in Cape Town and sent up ten maroon beanies for us, with an offer of doing more!! Wow! What fabulous generosity! The simple pattern is in last month’s newsletter or available from us. A 100gm ball of maroon Charity dk yarn, knits up 2 – 3 beanies. Please keep them coming in so that we are able to help to keep all the little heads warm this winter! Thanks again to all concerned.
Toddler jerseys are coming in well – Jenny Cox just delivered a bag of 30 little jerseys which will be going to Gill Brown’s preschool kids in the local township – Ann Squires has co-ordinated this so thank you both, ladies, for the great work you do. We also had a postal delivery of kids’ jerseys and beanies all the way from Florida in Gauteng – what a wonderful gesture, Bev!! Really, it’s overwhelming how generous and giving our customers (and their families) are – it’s impossible to thank everyone individually so please know that you are truly appreciated for your support and generosity. Thank you again.
Our Kits:
The Blanket-in-a-Bag are going really well – truly so easy to do and yet, such fun and keeps one very plugged in! Everyone just loves doing theirs … any colour variation is available for you so get yours soon – lovely and cuddly for winter. We also now have the beautiful, functional and creative Swing Knit Wrap kits – also fun to do and great to wear!
New yarns in stock:
We have had a frantic time unpacking, marking and then finding place for all the yarn that has come in! Our latest acquisition is from a new supplier that imports yarn from Turkey. We only got a few of their lines in, just to start and mostly, we are very impressed. The Kartopu Melange is currently our “top of the pops” in terms of the new Turkish range we received.
Elle have a stunning new “printed” range of Pullskein double knit – all in beautiful pastel shades. Their new Liniya range is doing well and unfortunately, there has been a delay in receiving the new fluffy pastel coloured Whisp range. We are hoping that it will all be in by the end of May. Some fabulous new colours have also been launched in the Family Knit double knit range and making space for all that we want to keep in stock is proving very challenging indeed.

Crochet Lessons:
It’s been a busy time at wool&more with crochet lessons! Once a week, Annette has been giving tips and advice to the local ladies who are doing the Crochet-a-Long. She has also been giving Reversible Crochet lessons which are proving to be challenging but very satisfying to those who have done the lessons. Some beginner ladies really cottoned on (excuse the pun) very quickly and show great crochet promise! Thank you Annette. Watch this space for a possibility of attending a Fantasy Blanket workshop held at wool&more – dates, cost, etc to be finalised soon. We may be having a visit from Doortjie Gersbach in July and are finalising dates and what she will be doing with us this year. Watch our newsletters for further details, as they come to hand.
Winter Trading Hours:
We will be open and trading for your convenience every Saturday and Public Holiday from 09H30 to 12H30 until 30th July. Our normal Monday to Friday hours apply: 10H00 to 16H00 (unless it is a Public Holiday, in which case, 09H30 to 12H30). Whilst we are normally here at around 09H30 in the mornings, we are dependent on banks, medical appointments, collections, etc being on time for us to be at the shop earlier than 10H00.
That’s all for now …. Am signing off to get back to searching for more nooks and crannies in which to stash stock!! Have a great month ahead and hope to see you all, in person, very soon.
With love
Joy Sachs
