Wool&more – March 2014 Newsletter
Well, the last newsletter was sent from a “ hot and humid” Plett, I am delighted to greet you today from a cool, wet and windy Plett! The rain over the past 12 hours has been wonderful – hugely needed. It’s my view that Autumn has finally arrived and guess what that means: TIME TO START KNITTING AND CROCHETING!
So it’s appropriate that I kick off today to let you have the March Specials, hot off the press:
Buy nine unprinted, (plain colour) Elle Family Knit 50gm assorted balls of 4ply and/or Double Knit for only R145-00 and get your tenth ball FREE!
Offer starts Monday 17th March and ends on Saturday 5th April 2014, whilst stock lasts, what a great way to get your stash built up!
Great tip at the end of the newsletter for doing a tension gauge piece, but first:
Over the past couple of weeks, after being overwhelmed by all the reps showing me their new yarns, the new stock has been trickling in and there has been much unpacking, marking then finding space to display…what a challenge!! But what a delight – I can’t wait for all the stock to be on the shelves for you to see, touch and consider for your projects.
Some of the new lines to be available are:
- Range of Stylecraft yarns from England including a gorgeous Baby Chunky and their lovely Wondersoft 3ply baby yarns
- Some exquisite yarns from the beautiful Katia range from Spain including the very cuddly Bombon and some lusciously thick Punto and Ushuaia yarns – their patterns are phenomenal and available at wool&more.
- Large range of our beautiful African Expressions wool and mohair yarns … from our backyard in the Eastern Cape. This range was only launched in 2011 by SAMIL, one of the principal mohair processors and exporters in the world who were concerned about the decline in production in South Africa. Not only do they now have a lovely range of yarns with varying wool and mohair content at excellent prices but their patterns and colours are hugely attractive.
- Elle has launched some fabulous lines including their Big Ball Chunky (500gm) in terrific colours, Baltic Seriously Chunky which knits up incredibly and has a lovely range of colours, Classic Wool Aran with a 20% wool component and their Just Wool line which is so soft and cuddly and 100% local wool. They have also relaunched their popular sock yarn – there is a revival in sock knitting so we have ordered their newly imported sock looms as well. See below for more “socking” news!!
- We are also waiting for “T-shirt” yarn and some great new lines from Turkey like the Candy Floss range which is a chunky, soft yarn and the very thick Barcelona yarn with 10% mohair and 10% wool components – great for thick and warm beanies. Their Touch Me scarf yarn is going to be a real hit! “Lollipop” range will also be in at the end of March. Most of these yarns are in bright, delicious colours – tickling your senses to the limit!
….and so much more!
On a completely different subject: do you know that there are still Plett ladies who are saying “I didn’t know there is a wool shop in town”?? Please, please let others know – perhaps pass this newsletter on to others for their information.
Lessons:
We are now offering Crochet lessons for Beginners and Intermediate levels. They will be held every Tuesday from 10h30 to 12h30 with a minimum of 2 “students” per class. The cost for the Beginner’s classes will be R135-00 per person which will include a manual, crochet hook, ball of yarn and tea/coffee. The cost for the Intermediate / follow up lessons will be R90-00 per person, including refreshments. Bookings are essential and need to be paid in full by the Friday preceding the class date to secure your place – we want to keep the classes small and personal.
And also very exciting are our up-coming Sock Knitting (all the rage!) lessons!! These will start on Thursday 10th April and will also be from 10h30 to 12h30 per person. Only one lesson necessary unless a refresher or follow up is required. Basic knitting knowledge a must. Cost per person is R150-00 which includes pattern, 1 ball Elle sock yarn, set of sock needles and refreshments. Please remember to book and pay in advance to secure your space by Tuesday morning of the week of the booked lesson.
Seems I am rambling on a bit now….
So, on that happy note and after a really long newsletter, I bid you a wonderfully creative time – remember to do your 10x10cm tension sample before each project – it’s so worthwhile. A good tip for ensuring accurate measurements of your 10×10 (4×4 – not the vehicle type!): Add 6 stitches to the required number and do three stitches on each side of your tension gauge piece in Garter stitch and three extra rows of Garter stitch top and bottom of the piece – in other words, “frame” your piece in Garter stitch – this will prevent your stocking stitch from curling or rolling inwards.
All the best for today.
Kind thoughts
