Your June issue of the wool&more newsletter comes to you a little earlier than usual because we really wanted to draw your attention to a great concept for a special day (no, not Father’s Day!)
Saturday 13th June is Worldwide Knit in Public Day and we have decided to celebrate the day in style: we will be knitting “knockers” (beautiful, comfortable, washable breast prostheses) for anyone who needs one (or two) … in other words, for ladies who have had a mastectomy and not had reconstructive surgery.
It’s a great international concept and we really feel driven to raise awareness of this idea. All “knockers” will be gifted to anyone who would like them… all you do is buy a kit from wool&more before the time or on the day, then spend a couple of hours with us on the 13th June, from 10h30 at Mugg & Bean at Market Square, Plett (or somewhere else in public if you are not in Plett) … just knitting, raising awareness and enjoying sharing this concept (and helping to make life a little more pleasant and comfortable for those ladies who would like a “knocker” – they will be gifted to any ladies who need them).
Fred (new owner of Mugg & Bean in Plett) has been kind enough to set aside some space for us and is offering 10% discount on any order made by participants of the Worldwide Knit in Public Day, who are knitting “knockers”.
Thanks so much Fred!
Kits (comprising soft 100% cotton yarn, natural fibre filling and pattern for all cup sizes) and needles (not included in the kits) will be available to purchase from wool&more before the day or at the event from 10h30 to 12h30. Really hoping to see lots of you there … it’s hugely worthwhile!!
The Wild Knitting workshop held last week was just incredible!! It took a little while for the participants to lose their knitting inhibitions but wow, once they got going, the work they produced was fantastic. I doubt they will ever see knitting the same way again!
Two additional workshops will be held in June: Thursday 25th and Friday 26th from 9h00 to 16h00. Book very soon please!
After a little coaxing, we managed to get Doortjie to offer a third day here in Plett – her classes for Thursday 9th and Friday 10th July are almost full so Doortjie will be presenting her amazing style and techniques of crochet on Saturday 11th July 2015 as well. Book, book, book … Please! All those booked on the first two days, please ensure payment comes to us before 10th June as there is already a waiting list and we need to begin to finalise numbers.
We are offering 20% off the gorgeous Elle Innova, Baltic and Helix yarns, just till 12th June 2015.
Please remember that Loyalty Cards are not applicable for specials / reduced items.
Reminders:
- We have been getting in a steady stream of articles, beautifully made, for the BIG B project … please keep the Beanies, Blankies and Booties flowing in … any size, colour, design will be great. (see May 2015 newsletter)
- The Tommy Toad competition is a little slow at the moment – a few knitted toys have trickled in. It’s just a lot of fun and some nursery schools will benefit from your efforts and the book … and the prize of a substantial voucher from wool&more should be enough to motivate your creativity! (see April newsletter).
- Crochet and Tunisian (Afgan Crochet) lessons for beginners and intermediate levels are held every Thursday morning at wool&more – please remember to book. If coming on a Thursday is a challenge for you, we are happy to make special arrangements on another day.
- Sewing machine servicing: we are the central drop off and collection point for the guy who does the work. Please contact us for details.
Trading hours till end July 2015: Monday to Friday from 10h00 to 16h00 and EVERY Saturday from 09h30 to 12h30
Here are some abbreviations and their meanings for you:
Last year we discussed TINK. That is the word used for pulling out / unpicking knitting (as in “Oh dear, I have to tink the whole thing now!”). It is derived from spelling Knit backwards!
UFO: unfinished objects (as in “I just can’t buy more yarn now as I have so many UFO’s still”)
WIPS: work in progress (plural) ( as in “My knitting bag is full of WIPS”). Note: These are not the same thing: WIPS implies that the items are work in progress whereas UFO implies a sense of abandonment!
ADKD: Attention Deficit Knitting Disorder (as in “I forgot to feed the dog and my husband … didn’t realise the time. I think I have a touch of ADKD”).
As always, please don’t hesitate to forward our newsletters to others and should you wish to read previous newsletters or access patterns, please look on our website www.woolandmore.co.za under the Newsletters tab.
On that happy note, sending warmest wishes from a cold and wet Plett, love and loads of Knitting Knockers in Public …. Until July, do take care.
Joy
PS – The article below is very thought-provoking – would love to have your view on it. Enjoy!
Never Before: Two Perspectives On Creative Achievement
“Art is when a human being does something for the first time.” –Seth Godin
“The point is not to do something that’s never been done before, but something you’ve never done before.” –Liz Gilbert
These two quotes are both from people I highly respect and admire. I came across them in completely different places. But, together, I think they bring up a very important question.
In Seth Godin’s view, art and creation is that moment when something completely new happens for the first time ever. That thing had never been done or thought before in the history of the world.
While it may not be clear from the quote that that’s what he meant, he went on in his talk to describe it. He highlighted new inventions and concepts that transform the world and change how things are done.
Granted, those are amazing and important moments of creativity and inspiration.
But it also somehow makes creativity or art feel inaccessible. “How can I think of something brand new? Everything has been thought of already!”
It’s a tall order.
Those moments of genius that change the world are rare.
Or are they?
Meanwhile, Liz Gilbert has chosen to focus on the individual experience of creativity.
Just because something has been done before doesn’t diminish the fact that it is an act of courage and growth when you do it for the first time.
Plus, you are likely to do it differently than anyone else. You bring your own voice and experience and personality to it. No one has ever done it before quite like that!
Like Liz, I believe that creativity is for the masses. It is about the daily practice to show up and change and grow.
Then, again, maybe there is room for both. Even for you, and me!
We should certainly allow ourselves… no, challenge ourselves… to try new things, and grow and create throughout our lives.
In that process we will have an awful lot of thoughts!
Have you ever had the experience of second guessing your own new ideas? There is a voice that says, “Someone else probably already thought of that.”
And sometimes, it’s true.
It’s like when you are looking for a domain name for your website. Checking all the options to see if they are already taken. And then, eventually, you find one that’s available. Yes! Grab it!
In a lifetime of human existence and creativity, I would guess that we each have a true first-time-ever thought. Maybe even a couple.
It actually happens all the time in the world. They might not all be earth-shattering in their scope. But they qualify.
How about you? Which perspective resonates with you and why?
