Celtic festivities in Knysna
The Knysna Celtic Festival was held on Saturday the 27th of February 2016 and ShowMe Knysna was there to support the Street Parade and day time Loerie Park festivities.
Main Road, Knysna came to life this Saturday as the Pipes & Drums Parade kicked off the Celtic Festival 2016.
Ten pipe bands from across the country individually competed in a Slow-to-Quick Street March Competition and then came together to form a Massed Pipe and Drums Parade – around 150 pipers, drummers and Highland dancers. Really spectacular to see!
The festival continued on the Loerie Park Sports Grounds where various pipe bands demonstrated their techniques.
The Celtic Highland Dancers from Cape Town mesmerised the audience with their amazing dance sequences and Christy Lyn enchanted us by playing her harp and singing her favourite Irish Celtic songs, which she had learned from a book she had purchased in Ireland.
On the sports field, dancers from The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society – Cape Town Branch, displayed their beautiful Celtic dance routines.
Across the way, the traditional highland games powered by Crossfit Knysna were also underway with the Caber Toss competition – proving you definitely need major muscle power to throw those poles around.
The rest of the day was filled with loads of Celtic entertainment, yummy food and people enjoying the Celtic Bar.
Raoul the Owl was also kept busy entertaining the kiddies with his amazing handcrafted toys, stilt walking and magic bubbles.
Well done to all who were involved in making this year’s Festival a huge success. We are definitely looking forward to next year’s Celtic Festival. Check out our galleries for more photos!
