Cadet festival training camp
The Knysna Sea Cadet Unit held its Annual Training Camp during the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival, supported by Worldsport Pick n Pay who provided lunches for 36 persons from Monday, to Sunday, July 1 to 7.
They also provided the basic foodstuffs for daily meals, bread, sugar, mieliemeal, milk, eggs and coffee.
The Rotary Club of Knysna made a donation to help those cadets who were regarded being worthy to attend, but could not afford to pay the camp fee. Checkers helped with chicken portions for the Thursday night dinner. Fruit & Veg City assisted by providing fruit and vegetables removed from display. East End Kwikspar assisted with bread rolls.
The camp is held to train cadets for promotion to a specific rank, and this year it was those aspiring to become able seamen.
The cadets also presented precision drill displays during the festival and carried out their anniversary parade in an exemplary fashion.
One of the aims of the Sea Cadets Corps is to promote community involvement, and so the cadets took on the job of upgrading the pre-school at Dam-se-Bos that the Navy was scheduled to carry out on Thursday, July 4.
Morality, loyalty, honesty and service are important to the cadets, so a third of the group attended the Sea Sunday Service at St Georges Church on Sunday. Another third of the group cleared up the camp, returning dormitories to classrooms, and the final third assisted the management at Knysna Quays Waterfront for the Waterkloof High School Orchestra Concert. During the festival they also stood by to assist as stewards for the oyster cooking and oyster eating events and the Admiral’s Oyster Ball.
