20 people injured in accident
About 20 people were injured – one seriously – when a truck overturned in Plettenberg Bay on Tuesday, August 15.
Police spokesperson Captain Marlene Pieterse said the incident happened at about 07:00 in Longstone Drive and that the truck had overturned as the driver, transporting about 30 workers, made a U-turn.
Pieterse said it is believed that the driver of the Toyota truck had been transporting the workers to a building site in Beachy Head Drive when he made a U-turn. “According to information we received at this stage it is alleged that the truck went beyond the tipping point while the driver was executing the manoeuvre and tipped over,” Pieterse said. All the passengers fell off the truck.
About 20 people were transported to hospitals in Kwanokuthula and Knysna for the treatment of injuries, she said, adding, “One worker was seriously injured in the accident.”
A further 15 workers were unscathed, Pieterse confirmed.
Pieterse said a case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated.
