The Sasol Solar Challenge cruises through Plettenberg Bay
The Sasol Solar Challenge held from the 24th of September to the 01 October 2016 has come to an end and the results are out.
ShowMe Plett was lucky enough to capture a couple of the cars as they made their way through Plettenberg Bay on route to Sedgefield on the 29th of September 2016.
The Sasol Solar Challenge is an eight-day event in which international and local solar-powered cars travel as far as they can on various roads between Pretoria and Cape Town, some covering a distance of up to 4 000 km. The challenge has taken place every two years since 2008, and the 2016 event started in Pretoria at the CSIR and ended in Cape Town at the V&A Waterfront.
This challenge aims to promote science, technology, mathematics and engineering among university students and the broader public by illustrating the role of these disciplines in an ingenious way. The competition is also aimed at promoting the power of alternative energy, notably solar.
There were 14 teams competing, 8 local and 6 international. Read about all the teams and their vehicles.
The Sasol Solar Challenge not only raises the profile of solar technology and promoting the importance of STEM subjects in schools, it also supports Jumping Kids a non-profit organisation, providing child amputees with prosthesis fitment.
