Introducing JUST DRU – Your Rage DJ 2015!
My name is JUST Dru and I am your DJ for Rage 2015! This is my third year DJ-ing for Rage 2015 – I honestly believe that this is going to be the best one yet!
ShowMe Plett had the honor of interviewing JUST Dru, the DJ for Rage 2015.
So Dru, tell me, how did it all start for you?
Back in school at the age of 16, I was a very enthusiastic cyclist, unfortunately due to medical reasons I had to stop – this is how I got into mixing music. I found this cool program on my computer and started playing around – this is ultimately how I found my passion for music.
What gave you that initial push to really make something of your DJ-ing career?
When you are actually standing up on stage and looking at the people having a good time and realising that you are a motivator for that enjoyment, really makes me enjoy what I do, and that’s what gave me that initial push.
Who is your biggest inspiration as a DJ?
As cliché as it sounds, Martin Garrax really inspires me. He is a similar age to me and he has become so successful in such a short period of time – he created one song and since then has just sky rocketed! It just takes that one person to notice you and then you are set!
What single night out has been the most memorable for you as a DJ?
During Rage last year, I was playing at VIP in the 3:00am to 4:00am slot when I had the manager come to me and tell me that I had to play longer because there were so many people still there. Here is a video from the night, where you can hear the song “Pursuit of Happiness” faded out to hear the crowd.
CAUTION: Goose bump material
Are you able to share any of your secret tricks with me?
One trick I can share – get all the girls on the dancefloor, as soon as all of them on the dancefloor, guaranteed the guys will follow ;)
I think all you aspiring DJ’s reading this, should probably remember that trick!
Speaking of aspiring DJ’s, Dru what mistake do you see up and coming DJ’s make? What would advice would you give them?
The most common mistake I see from up and coming DJ’s is that they stick to one playlist and play the same thing over and over again.
The advice I would give you is to experiment with other genres, there is a quote that I think would be inspiring for up and coming DJ’s, it goes something like this;
“Don’t be scared to experiment with other genres, you never know what might be happening next in life.”
I have a quote for myself, it serves as my inspiration and slogan for my DJ-ing career;
One life, live it”
What do you love most about your DJ-ing scene?
There is always someone different walking through the door, as a DJ you get exposed to so many awesome characters coming to your gigs. Sometimes you see someone you wouldn’t expect to see at the gigs – its awesome!
What is your opinion regarding the old school DJ-ing where everything was limited to vinyl compared to modern DJ-ing where everything is never put onto a physical medium?
To be honest, if I could play on Vinyl, I would. Playing on Vinyl is just so much more physical and interesting.
One could explain it like this, Vinyl is like driving a manual car, you have most of the control whereas modern DJ-ing is almost like having an automatic car in some aspects, its all digitalised even though there is so much that goes into it. People hardly understand all the buttons on my board.
Is having your own style separate from all the other DJ’s as important in modern DJ-ing?
Absolutely! If you all sound the same, people will lost interest – Each DJ needs to represent who they are and bring across their unique qualities.
How would you describe your style?
That’s a very difficult question, uh – I have that surfer boy look! Haha.
One thing about me is that I don’t stick to one genre of music, I like to incorporate a little bit of everything into my sets.
I like to play songs that will appeal to everyone.
What track never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?
Mammoth – this is by far my most favourite tune of all time – I can listen to it and play day in and day out – it just has that amazing vibe to it.
And on the other end, what track became so popular that you now cannot stand?
Animals, I think it was just overplayed.
Out of all the songs you have, which one never fails?
Albatross – whenever you see people starting to leave the dancefloor I just put this song on and they all swarm back – that beat just makes you want to move!
Don’t forget to check out JUST DRU at Rage, he will be playing at Beach Bar, VIP, the beach!
