Meet Marianne, the Dog Nurse
Meet Marianne Wardle. Spirited; she likes her hair a certain way, touring in a motor home with her husband, and playing bowls. She uses the word Woofies a lot and behind the sunny smile is a formidable lady, very passionate about her cause.
Fundraising
Marianne Wardle has been the Plett Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) Secretary and Fundraiser for 6 years. Her quarterly jumble sale at the taxi rank is possible with the Municipality’s support and a George Transport Depot is kind enough to give her damaged bags of dog food. Marianne’s untiring efforts ensure deprived animals in this community get the best possible chance to a contented life.
Have you noticed the laundry baskets at the supermarkets asking you to donate a tin of food to care for the PAWS animals? Marianne is the fairy who diligently collects your contribution from Spar, Pick & Pay and Beacon Isle Kwikspar and distributes the food into the townships via PAWS inspector Robert Ruiters and volunteer doggy carer Di Lancaster.
She labels the collection tins at the pay points and makes it her mission to check them regularly. She is tremendously grateful for the coin donations and says she is lucky enough to have a husband who likes to count the pennies. “Between the coin collection and the food donation you typically feed an astonishing 6000 each year!”
To mark International Animal Week Marianne organises Plett’s Annual Dog Walk where dog owners enter in droves to walk their pooches from Central Beach, down Longships, towards Beachy Head and back up to he starting point. The entry fee for the 5km walk is R30 per dog and with finish line penalties built in, it is incredibly funny to see Plett’s canine community tackle this route!
Doggie Recovery Nurse
PAWS hosts Spaying Days in all areas between Kwanokuthula and Kranshoek. On these days you will find Marianne flat on the floor at the ready to comfort a group of doggies while their anaesthetic takes effect. Under her watchful eye she covers them in blankets so they can wake up calmly in her make shift recovery room.
Marianne, we thank you for your dedication and passion over the last 6 years. You do an absolutely wonderful job and ShowMe salutes you, Mrs Dog Nurse!
