Plett Music Festival this month
The popular Plett Music Festival is set to hit all the right notes when it is held for the fourth time later this month.
Not only does the festival offer music from some of the country’s top musicians, but all the funds raised during the event goes to a worthy cause.
The beneficiary is the Kids of Kurland School Project which supports The Crags Primary School on the outskirts of the town.
The school, which has been the main beneficiary of the project since it was established 16 years ago, has more than 500 learners and only a few teachers, which have led to hugely overcrowded classes. A large portion of the money goes towards employing additional teachers.
The Kids of Kurland School Project is a charitable organisation which relies on donations – making fundraising events such as the festival key to its success.
This year the festival will kick off at the White House theatre and venue in the town centre on February 23, and run until February 26.
First to take the stage will be popular Knysna songbird Mia Swart. She has performed on stage from the tender age of 13, made her first record three years later and continues to enchant audiences across the globe.
Swart and her accompanists will perform timeless music in English, French, German and Afrikaans during her performance at the festival. Joining her on stage will be Olga Schoeman on harp and piano and Ruan van der Vyver playing the flute.
The next evening will feature a special performance by acclaimed singers The Ubuntu Bass Baritones. Members of the group – Thato Machina, Owen Metsileng, Monde Masimini and Mandla Mndebele – have performed on stages from Wales to Melbourne. The audience can look forward to arias from operas such as Carmen, L’elisir d’amor and the Barber of Seville, as well as excerpts from several musicals.
On February 25, Plett’s own talent will take to the stage with a range of genres to suit every taste. These include soul, opera, rap, gospel, folk, choral and several others.
The festival promises to end off on a world-class note with a performance by the Rosanthorn Cello Trio. The group consists of Carol Thorns of Red Cello fame, Dorette Roos of the Cape Town Philharmonic Ochestra and cellist and composer Anjulie Nock.
Tickets are R200 per person available from The Old House Shop, or contact Ann Fermor on 082-452-8764.
The venue will open from 19:00 every evening and there will be a cash bar and snacks for sale.
