Plett actors shine at awards
Plettenberg Bay’s acting talent received recognition with several nominations for the 25th Clover Showtime Awards in Port Elizabeth.
The award ceremony, held along with a review presented by Port Elizabeth Musical and Dramatic Society (Pemads) and Clover, was held from January 22 to 29 at the Little Theatre in Central, Port Elizabeth.
Local actor and cofounder of the Bitou Amateur Theatrical Society (Bats) Roger Davis was nominated for his part as a supporting actor while his wife Nita Davis received a nomination for best supporting actress.
The play also received recognition for its set and decor done by Nigel Hall as well as Rob and Beatty-Ann Starkey. One of South Africa’s first television personalities and former professional actor David Hall-Green was nominated as best actor in a play.
This, after the Bats were invited to perform four shows in Port Elizabeth in March last year where they showcased the play Old Actors Never Die… They Just Lose the Plot. This was their third play since the Bats was established about three years ago.
The play, a hilarious farce by British playwright Lynn Brittney, was very popular in Plettenberg Bay when it hit the stage last year.
Members of Pemads saw a DVD of the group’s performance and invited them to perform at the historical Little Theatre from March 27 to 29.
The play centres around a retirement home for retired theatricals where they continue their lives of high drama although their acting careers are long over.
Among the characters is Edmund, a former well-known actor and philanderer, who arrives at the home to find his three ex-wives there. The women have however in the meantime become close friends and share a strange bond – their interest in Edmund.
“The Bats received a special award as a visiting theatrical group for their performance of Old Actors Never Die. Although no individual awards went to our actors, the recognition for the hard work that went into taking the play there was fantastic,” Bats spokesperson Marsja Hall-Green said.
She added a few Bats members attended the award ceremony and show, and thoroughly enjoyed the event.
“Now they are all in rehearsal for the next play taking place in April this year.”
Bats members and the cast of Old Actors Never Die shone at the 25th Clover Showtime Awards for their performance in the play.
